Ekken (or Ekiken) was a herbalist and Confucian scholar who authored or edited a large number of books. This gallery shows the 107 pages of plant pictures that he included in Yamato Honzō (Shohinzu) [Japanese Herbal (Miscellaneous Drawings)]. It was pubished in 1715. Ekken's drawings of flowers and leaves are fairly basic and colored only in shades of gray. Click on a picture to enlarge it. Many of the plant names given by Ekken are no longer used which makes identification difficult.
